You Can't Always Get What You Want
Proven all too often - fools reach far beyond their grasp,
Pretty lips speak words distracting - leaves one breathless and aghast!
True destiny now silent, displeasure thinly veiled,
We thought that we deserved it all - how miserably we failed!
With masses busy choking - all but gagging on their greed,
No thought of any difference between wanting it - and need!
When society can't be civil - human nature's stripped clean bare,
With everyone out for Number One - nobody's got a prayer!
Do unto others? A complete waste of time,
Hours best focused on Me, Me - and Mine!
Delaying gratification, the earning of praise?
Sentimental slop in The Internet Age!
Manners, compassion, honor and trust?
Ignored by our role-models - who jeer with disgust!
Engorged on self-worth - we seek fortune and fame,
Say anything, do anything - there's really no shame!
Hunkered down in my safe spot - the chaos insane,
With Karma kind, and color blind - no desire to cause pain!
Trust's window now barred - naivety scarred - yet still feisty if not downright tough,
Cause learning's what living is all about - I will never get enough!
