H.O.W. to Commit the Perfect Random Act of Kindness

Updated on February 17, 2013

Giving IS Getting

The H.O.W. Movement (Humanity-One-World) has called on each of us to perform at least one conscious 'Random Act of Kindness' this month - and every month from here on in!

I am of the mindset that giving feels BETTER than getting - and everybody deserves to experience that rush of endorphins - not to mention the reward of fresh, clean Karma!

A single person's actions CAN change the world - why shouldn't it be YOU? Or YOU?

Or ME?

Randomly.

Anonymously.

And with gratitude. Gratitude that we have the ability - the humanity - to help in some small way...

Heart, Compassion, Tolerance..

When Officer Larry DePrimo spotted the homeless man loitering against a building in Manhattan, NY - and started to head in his direction - most would have assumed that he was about to roust the dirty beggar from the sidewalk - as one would a chicken that had escaped the roost.

But, that was the furthest thing from his mind!

While this policeman's feet were feeling the New York chill encased in not one - but TWO pairs of woolen socks AND a sturdy pair of boots - the homeless man's feet were complete bereft of any type of footwear. Bare to the elements!

And not only bare, but also bruised, blistered - and almost blue!

When Officer DePrimo got down on one knee beside the man - it was not to look down upon him and chase him away - it was to offer him a pair of his own socks!

But, instead of readily accepting, the man turned down the socks, thanked Officer DePrimo politely - and BLESSED him for offering!

Blessed HIM?

Officer DePrimo learned some unexpected lessons that day - kneeling there at the feet of a man that most would pass by with nothing more than a sneer of derision, if that!

Officer DePrimo learned a lesson about dignity - and true generosity of spirit!

And - I believe it changed his life - just as he changed mine - and hopefully now - yours as well!

Because, it was then that Officer DePrimo rose - stunned almost to tears - and entered the store the shoeless man was leaning against. He purchased not only woolen socks, but a pair of boots as well - and returned to his eye-to-eye kneeling position to present them wordlessly to a man who had NEVER owned a pair of shoes in his whole life!

And, that is the exact moment a tourist from Arizona used her iPhone to turn this beautiful - very nearly anonymous Act of Kindness - public.

And I - for one - am very glad she did...

I feel that Officer Larry DePrimo's Random Act of Kindness perfectly personifies the H.O.W. movement, and while his actions were not to remain anonymous - it was due only to timing and technology - not any desire on his part for recognition or reward.

It is the perfect model for what is beginning as a grassroots movement - the H.O.W. of simply giving...

My question is this: H.O.W. are Y.O.U. going to impact someone's life today?
