My Name is The United States of America and I am a Sugar-a-holic
70Let's Tax Sugar Like Alcohol! Sweeeet!
Imagine the following scenario unfolding in front of convenience stores nationwide:
Loitering Teenager: Psst! Hey! Hey, man! Here's a couple bucks - would ya mind forking over a candy bar?
Customer: Bite me, kid! That's illegal!
Yes, apparently sugar has become so dangerous for the bloated masses that legislators feel the need to control it in the same manner as alcohol - in order to better 'protect' their unsuspecting citizens from harm! (of course!)
So say two fat-cat law-makers from the sunny, bankrupt state of California - who - always looking for new and innovative ways to stick it to their loyal constituents and milk one more delicious tax dollar from them - have devoured an article written by Dr. Robert Lustig and associates from the University of California and published in the National Post.
An article which clearly identifies itself as being based on opinion and conjecture - and not on any formal studies whatsoever!
No matter. Ignoring that tiny morsel, state legislators are - as always - more than willing to further fork us over and dictate our lives! And to shove another rotten tax down our throats!
Gag!
Where will it end? Better yet - WILL it end?
With such all-consuming issues such as joblessness, homelessness - and leaderless(ness) driving us to the brink of self-despair, if not self-destruction - one wonders if there are any elected officials with the stomach to take a bite out of said issues - before they consume us completely?
Instead, they seem most eager to not partake of the bigger picture, scarf up a fat pay check - and feast upon our sugar addiction instead!
And we going to just sit here and swallow it?
Forty four million Americans are considered obese! This number is shocking, terrifying, and downright unpalatable - but the meat of the matter is that taxing sugar will not take a bite out of the problem. Not even a nibble!
This is not to advocate sugar consumption. This is to say that the government needs to stop babysitting us under the pretence of caring - and then taxing us for the privilege!
It's simply unpalatable and completely tasteless!
If they really wanted to polish off this problem - perhaps a heaping helping of education, information, and better labeling would be a good starter - following the same recipe as they do in many parts of Europe and Canada!
But, alas, in the United States - legislators chow down on the distasteful contention that government controls such as taxation and the imposition of age limits - are more savory than educating people!
My guess is that it's a heaping pile cheaper as well!
Sugar won't kill us any faster than choking on more taxes will!
Hopefully, these caring folk will never find out about the unappetizing ingredients in the air we ingest!
We'd all be toast then!
Is it only me - or does anyone else feel a little nauseous?

Ha ha! Love the crazy illustrations. Nice one Leslie.
The great part of living in America is it is NONE of your business what others do as long as they do not infringe upon your personal rights!...........find something else to write about!
very well spoken put together well pictures placed well
The subsidy for sugar production is enormous, corn in particular.
Sugar in the morning, sugar in the evening, sugar at suppertime. Be my little sugar and love me all the time!
Sweet article. I enjoy how you don't sugarcoat things.
Very informative and well versed Hub. Voted up and interesting. Great pics as well!
And Amer Rom....what's up with the attitude? You've heard of that little thing called "freedom of speech" correct? Not to mention the article was about the gov't sticking it's nose in where it doesn't belong...once again.
Politicians and lawyers have sufficiently slammed the tobacco industry and now have turned on the junk food companies. Get your Twinkies while you can.
The images said it all for me! I laughed so hard. And then I settled to read your wonderful words - and I was in awe. Your writing style is unique and magical.
.......what a fine irreverent but beautifully truthful mind you have - if you follow me over the rainbow you will see this as posted on my Facebook page with a direct link back here in its most righteous display for a new world order - and please check out my buddy from America - he is THE MAN WITH NO PANTS on the hub here and tell him Colin sent ya ....

Boy was that easy to swallow!! :)
There ain't nothin' sweeter than you ImKarn23!!
Interesting take on sugar!! Never related it to politics, but can see how you do. Vote up!
They better not try to take away my candy. Chocolate is the only thing keeping me from Civil War II.
This hurts Karen....I'm a sugar addict and can't get myself off it. Great hub though a definite vote up!
I totally agree with you. Politicians do the dumbest things - seriously California has much bigger problems that a sugar tax is not going to fix. I do agree with stricter labeling, but of course the lobbyists who have bought and paid for congress are going to have none of that. I also think genetically modified/engineered foods should be clearly labeled - but that's probably a fantasy that will never come true either.
There's a lot to gag on in politics lately - perhaps the sugar will make some of it go down easier lol. Great hub :)
Sugar-o-holic!!
That's the bitterest truth about the sweet marketing!
Awesome use of words...you are so witty! In my world big difference between sugar and chocolate and that is where the buck stops...everything else is out of my view.
Your words have a rhythm of high energy..did you have your fix of sugar this morning when you keystroked this little ditty out?
As long as they don't tax my chocolate!! LOL Sadly, this does not surprise me. Love your way of getting your point across, and informing us of what is going on. I think I need a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down....
You've got that straight! It's all about the money and power. Well that is great your writing these articles seems you are doing great getting it out there which we need. :)
